Like most people, August is a wonderful month to go on vacation with the family. Usually the last week in August because it is right before school starts. And living in the desert, a welcome reprieve of the dog days of summer. As do most families, we love camping. Not to mention hiking, fishing, boating and horseback riding. Picture in your mind a beautiful campsite, near a clear and pristine creek with the sounds of aspen leaves and the smell of pine. Did I mention fishing; yes fishing in a creek like this is just my idea of heaven.
And this is where my story begins; it was just as I said a beautiful vacation was just starting. Now as many streams today, the fish are introduced from usually a fish farm where they are raised to a predetermined age and released into the stream by the officials from fish and game department. And dates and times are never given so they give everyone a chance to catch a fish. So this particular day the stocking truck that delivers the rainbow trout happened to show up that day. Very happy to see such a sight, both adults and children alike. So the two gentlemen from fish and game do their jobs by taking 3 big nets filled with teaming rainbow trout waiting to swim in their new home. Now it was just my nature to be kind to people that are doing a particular job or deed to ask if they would like a fresh bag of Jerky. Now mind you, this was not a bribe, they had already did their job nor was I asking for any special request. As they tried Jed’s Famous Beef Jerky they were impressed by the taste and remarked favorable on the texture and flavor, they were pleased.
After a brief discussion about jerky the one fellow went back to the truck and out of a different tank brought forth a net full of extremely large trout usually only reserved for the lakes of the area. He took the net and put the fish into the stream, and proceeded to take one more net full and do the same. They soon left and we thanked them for their efforts. Soon, it was time to go fishin! Now as a father most of my time spent fishing is setting up rigs and baiting hooks, and perhaps setting a hook into a waiting trout. So time had begun, and suddenly a large tug came from the pole, as it was apparent that the hook was set the pole was handed to my nearest son, in this case it was Sean. To see the look and expression on his face was priceless.
The memory of Sean pulling up the largest trout I have ever seen in my many years of fishing was something I will personally never forget! As did Sean, from that moment on, Sean is the number one fishing person in our family. Always the first one to get his fishing pole in the water, the first to try any new form of fish to eat, yes that moment was big for both of us. The only problem is what if I had given the pole to my other son, would fishing be as big in his life. One of life’s ironies perhaps.
